My, oh my. It feels good to be back at the easel. My collector on this and the next piece is so wonderful. She commissioned the paintings before our event but said, “Do your show pieces first. Mine can wait until you get back.” So Terry’s are first on my commission list to paint.
I so adore painting Roosters. They have such “Cocky” personalities. After sketching up the basic drawing on the canvas in an oil wash, I begin painting the background. The dark blue-green mix of Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Orange + White will accentuate the red on this guy’s head.
Cadmium Red Light mixed with Cadmium Red Deep is used for the darkest parts of the comb and wattles, pure Cadmium Red Light is used to highlight them. Next we add the eye. Since the light is coming from the upper right the catch light is placed at 1 o’clock. Then the colored part of the eye directly opposite the catch light at about 7 o’clock is lightened.
The colorful feathers on his body are painting with thick, bold brushstrokes.
Paint the arching tail feathers and PRESTO…… Ruler of the Roost is finished! Hope you’ll come watch me paint the companion piece tomorrow. I’ll give you a little sneak preview, it has Sunflowers! Hugs,
