Limited Original Giclees for Fredericksburg

Today I’m working on some Limited Original Giclees for Fredericksburg Art Gallery in the Texas Hill Country. The unembellished giclee is shown on the left. The prints are just a little blue when we get them from our printer. Actually this is an advantage because when I enhance the piece with warm colors they really POP!

Here is the finished hand embellished giclee. The adobe wall, floor and flower pot have all been glazed to give them warmth. The door, chili ristra and most of the flowers have been repainted. I decided to change the Daisies from yellow to white. They give a nice contrast to the door, southwest bench and the surrounding flowers.

Jack and I love the Texas hill country so it’s fun to have a gallery in the quaint village of Fredericksburg. The second piece for Donna is a quintessential Texas spring bluebonnet landscape with a Senkarik touch. The unenhanced piece is shown to the right.

I’ve repainted the sky to give it a warm glow from the afternoon sun. The next step is to glaze the dark areas of the Bluebonnets with Ultramarine Blue + Liquin.

We photographed this barn near Johnson City, Texas. It was so fun to paint when I did the original piece. I added the Texas flag on the roof from another structure we had seen elsewhere in the hill country. On the giclee I go back in to highlight the sunwarmed areas on the side of the building and fence. The roof is also enhanced.

All of the spring wildflowers in the foreground are repainted and highlights are added to the water cascading over the rocks. I don’t know about you but I’m ready to go dangle my toes in the clear stream.

A Kiss of Winter

Several areas in our great country are experiencing the first snow of the season so I thought it would be fun to paint some of the fluffy white stuff. In the initial sketch I draw the architecture as if there was not going to be any snow at all. The base line of the building, door and pot are established. This way I can keep all of the proportions correct.

In a snow painting I make the adobe mix darker than usual so the white will really POP! I’m using mixtures in varying amounts of  MUD (Ultramarine Blue + Alizarin Crimson) + Cadmium Orange + a touch of Cadmium Yellow Medium + White. The chili ristras are washed in with Alizarin Crimson + Liquin.

The southwest style door is a mix of Pthalo Blue + White. The willow branches in the opening are drawn over the dark area that has been allowed to dry. Bracing against the mahl stick makes the process much easier.

The white canvas works to my advantage when painting the English Ivy draped over the building. Leaving the blank canvas lets me see how the pattern of snow will look!

The Mums are completely painted, then they are covered with snow. I’m careful to “Lay” the paint on the flowers so I don’t pick up any of the color underneath. This way the white remains crisp and clean.

Since I usually paint sun warmed architecture surrounded by flowers it’s a real challenge to paint snow and maintain my colorful “Voice”. We finally figured the best way to accomplish this was for me to paint the first snow of the year. That way there is still foliage and flowers on the plants that have been touched by A Kiss of Winter.

The outside dimension of the Senkarik Signature Frame is 19 inches tall and 16 inches wide. The size of the painted image is 13 3/4 inches tall by 10 3/4 inches wide. Chili Enchantment

Taos has an empty spot on their wall again so here goes on another mini! These bright spots of color are fun to paint and make me stretch coming up with new ideas. Cool blue-greens are used in the background so they will fall in back of the warm adobe. The distant trees are made dark enough to accentuate the sunlit wall.

One of my readers asked if I use a straight edge to draw the lines in the doors. Actually I don’t. Bracing my arm on a mahl stick and using a fine liner brush, it’s fairly easy to draw straight lines in a vertical orientation. I show this technique at the left, the picture is from a different painting. You can learn to do this with some practice. Pulling horizontal lines is a little harder, I don’t use a mahl stick because it limits the side to side movement of my arm. Some artists just turn their canvas so the horizontal line becomes vertical and easier to pull. You can do it, just practice, practice, practice.

After the chili ristra and door are finished, the light and shadows on the old paver floor are blocked in. As the floor goes back it becomes bluer or cooler. This makes it recede.

Then a fine liner brush is dipped in a mix of MUD + Liquin and the lines separating the tiles are drawn into the wet paint. The curved perspective lines are made first, followed by the horizonal lines indicating the uneven tile pattern.

Pink and orange Canna Lilies and Lavender fill the flower bed to the right of the door. Dioxazine Purple is used for the Lavender, this is a color we just can’t achieve with our Double Primary Mixing System. CLICK HERE to learn more about how we mix paint.

Colorful Welcome

Today I’m back to working on another one of those “suitcase” paintings. The galleries have nicknamed my small pieces this because people can take the art home with them, even if they are flying. The painting above is for Walden Fine Art in Taos where we photographed this charming little gate years ago.

The top part of the wall and gate are made dark so the viewer’s gaze is drawn to the light in the background beyond. The lantern is drawn into the wet paint of the adobe wall using a fine liner brush. I brace against a mahl stick to steady my hand.

Magenta Clematis drapes over the wall and Pthalo Blue gate. The flowers are blocked in first, then the foliage is painted.

How can you paint Taos without adding Hollyhocks? I just had to put some in. These are a mix of Permanent Rose + Cadmium Red Light + White. The green leaves are painted with mixes of Ultramarine Blue + Hansa Lemon Yellow.

A Special Day

I love how the waves crash on the rocks lining Monterey Bay and can hear the refreshing sound in my mind as I paint. A mixture of MUD (Ultramarine Blue + Alizarin Crimson) + Cadmium Orange + White is used for the giant boulders. Brush strokes of blue, leftover from the water, are made on the lower portion of the rocks to indicate wetness and the mist rising from the surf.

In spring the ice plant covering the rocks bursts out in bloom. I’ve mixed Permanent Rose + White for the brilliant pink blossoms. The shadow areas are Permanent Rose + Magenta + White. Moving closer to the foreground the water becomes more intense. Pthalo Blue + Ultramarine Blue + White makes a nice dark blue, the sunlit areas of the water are pure Pthalo Blue + White.

What a trip down memory lane this has been. The day we met Greg was a sunny one on the bay, the ice plant was in its best, pink Easter finery. That was the beginning of a great friendship. Now, Greg and Paulette have started a life together. This piece was painted with a lot of love in celebration of the two occasions, both A Special Day. Hugs, Mikki Senkarik
