A Southwest Collaboration

First of all, Jack’s latest article has been published on Fine Art Studio Online. CLICK HERE to read Sluggish Sameness. I think artists are going to find this very helpful and also get a little insight into some of the painting theories I use.

Our collectors saw the painting above, Embracing Serenity, at our Annual Event in Santa Fe over Labor Day. They especially liked the scene in the background. These majestic bluffs are stalwart sentinels located at Ghost Ranch, near Abiquiu in northern New Mexico where Georgia O’Keefe lived and painted for many years. I took artistic license and moved them right outside this quiet courtyard. That’s the fun of being an artist, we can make the world the way we want it to be.

With “artistic license” in mind we decided to make several changes. While Bill and Sarah were in Santa Fe they took pictures of a lot of southwest details they thought were really cool. We’ve taken the basic courtyard and incorporated several unique elements. If you’d like to see this or any of the other pictures larger just click on the image.

SK11313 Spirit of the Southwest Step 1

The architecture is drawn up with a brush dipped in an oil wash made of Ultramarine Blue + Alizarin Crimson + Liquin. In order to make sure I get the proportions of the door with it’s cross shaped window correct I draw it as if there is no wall. Then the thick wall and beam over the door are drawn.

The corner feels a bit tight. So I move the arch and open doors to the left, giving more room for the kiva fireplace. The errant lines will be erased by dipping my brush in clean thinner and rubbing them out. Isn’t this much easier to do on canvas than it would be with real adobe walls?

I continue to sketch the plan for the painting up on the canvas. This gives me a road map to follow.
