First Painting of the New Year!

Sketch Cali

I still can’t believe 2015 is here. My, did last year ever go quickly! Well, here we are back at the easel with my first painting of the new year. This is a commission for a fellow artist and her husband. We’ve had fun collaborating and putting all of our ideas together. My sketch is shown above, the only change they had was to plant the Sunflowers in a large container.

SA0115 Step 1

We start by drawing up the basic structure of the building in the foreground. I use a brush dipped in a thin oil wash made of MUD (Ultramarine Blue + Alizarin Crimson) + Liquin.

SA0115 Step 2

After the major elements in the front of the piece are sketched up I concentrate on the buildings tumbling down the hillside in the background.

SA0115 Step 3

The initial drawing on the canvas is finished, we’ll begin painting in our next session. Looking at the image I realize I need to raise the lantern on the left side of the door. I’ll do that later when I work on that area. Hope you’ll come back and visit the studio again. Very exciting to watch this. I can’t believe ours is the first painting of the year, and that you called me a “fellow artist”. I certainly strive to be! : – ) Joanne

Hello Mikki, even your sketches are great fun to watch…. I like your paintings from the very start until the end..As for trees, I strive to find some explanation about the colors and strokes that you use in the different styles of trees. I’ll be very grateful if you support us with some tips about painting trees. Thank you in advance.
