Revisit our Garden

2015-4-27 Jerusalem Sage

Wanted to give you an update on our garden, our Jerusalem Sage is in full bloom now. Isn’t it cool?

2015-4-28 Sonny and Cher labeled

We’ve planted a couple of Meyer Lemons that will grow up on the trellis behind. The shorter one on the right is named Sonny. The tall one on the left is, of course, Cher! Jack and I always felt she was the best singer of the two anyway. AND…..she certainly has A LOT more baby lemons!

The lowering sun really makes our fountain courtyard glow in the late afternoon. We get this incredible light show every evening!

Back to work. After blocking in the light and shadow pattern of the red door I paint the heart shaped leaves of the Morning Glory Vine that dangles down. The thick green paint is gently “Laid” on top of the red so I won’t pick up any of the underlying color. That keeps the leaf color nice and crisp.

The lines indicating the edges of the planks are drawn into the red door while it’s still wet and the door latch is completed. Moving to the floor the dark areas are blocked in first. Then I let the sunlight stream across the smooth surface.

In order to paint the bottom edge of the canvas, its taken off the easel and placed flat. You can see how having the canvas mounted to cardboard makes it easy to handle. Molly has to supervise, she said to tell everyone HI!

With the canvas flat the perspective and horizontal lines separating the individual tiles are continued on to the sides. These are drawn freehand into the wet paint of the floor.

Highlighting the edges of the tiles illuminated by the sunshine finishes our work for today. Thank you for following along. Please remember, you can click on the images to enlarge them. Also, if you have any questions please feel free to ask. Hugs,

Mikki, your garden is beautiful! You are such an inspiration, because I know you’ve done most of the work yourself. How do you find the time to be a wonderful painter AND such an accomplished gardener?
