To start on the second in my pair of Indian portraits, I wash in the dark and light pattern on the face. A thin mixture of MUD (Ultramarine Blue + Alizarin Crimson) + Liquin is used.

Then the head dress and clothing is roughed in with the same mixture and a large Bright (Square) brush. To learn more about the brushes I use CLICK HERE.

Various shades of Ultramarine Blue + Ivory Black + White are used for the background.

It’s fun adding the accoutrements of buckskin fringes, breast plate and beadwork.

The shadows on the headdress are blocked in first. I use the large Bright brush to shape the feathers. The flat side is used for the broader strokes. Then it is turned on the edge to make the long, narrow, shaft.

 Chief Hollow Horn Bear was a Brule Lakota Sioux during the Indian Wars on the Great Plains. He began to favor peace with whites in the 1870s and became a celebrity. He was featured on a 14 cent postage stamp and also on a five dollar bill.
