It’s Snowing in Santa Fe

First of all I just want to THANK all of you for your wonderful comments in response to “Jack’s Place”. I have to admit it was quite some time before I was ready to do this painting, just so many emotions were involved. But when I finally worked up the courage to tackle it, set my canvas on the easel and picked up my brush it’s like Our Lord took over. I just hung on. I’ve never had a painting go together so easily. And the final result was way beyond what I’d ever imagined it would be. Thank you God! I really appreciate all of your support to help honor “OUR” Jack. Many have told me they’ve made direct donations to the JACK WHITE SCHOLARSHIP FUND and the auction is going amazingly well! CLICK HERE to see.

OK, as Jack would say, “Get back to work!” We’re going to Santa Fe today, this piece is a commission of a snowy scene in the quaint New Mexico town. The basic architecture is drawn on the canvas with a brush dipped in a thin oil wash of MUD (Ultramarine Blue + Alizarin Crimson) + Liquin. I draw the plan as if it were a summer day, without any snow. This helps me to get the proportions and perspective correct.

VIDEO DEMONSTRATION: Adding the Snow

Jeana asked me to include Samantha, one of her fur babies who has gone to Heaven. The sweet Doberman has wandered into the entry courtyard, taking a spot in center stage.

The adobe building is constructed with mixtures of Cadmium Orange + Ultramarine Blue + MUD + White. The lighter portions have a bit of Cadmium Yellow Medium mixed in for additional warmth. Some Alizarin Crimson is worked into the shadow of the Ristras because the red Chilies reflect on the wall.

The shadow portion of the door is painted first, using a mix of Cobalt Blue + a touch of Ultramarine Blue + White. The sunlit part will be made of Cobalt Blue + White.

The straw angel is painted with combinations of MUD + Cadmium Yellow Medium + White. My wrist is braced against the mahl stick to steady my hand as I delineate the details.

It’s always fun to paint Santa Fe in the snow. Hope you come follow along as the progress continues!

AND while it may be snowing in “The City Different”, spring is definitely springing here. Rosie is in FULL BLOOM!
