Out in the Open!

Well, I’m BACK!!!!!! Finished all my top secret, surprise paintings. At least for a little while anyway. So let’s get to work. This painting is going to hang to the left of two other pieces I’ve done for my collector.

Here’s the pen and ink sketch, we’re including Jeana’s fur baby, Looka. He’s now in Puppy Heaven but this painting will bring her fond memories of her sweet boy.

Moving to the canvas I begin “Constructing” the architectural elements with a thin oil wash made of MUD (2 parts French Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + Liquin.

After getting the building drawn I add our boy, Looka. My wrist rests on the mahl stick that is hooked over the top of my easel. This steadies my hand as I draw the details of his anatomy.

I’ve gotten in the habit of labeling the flowers so I’ll remember what I’m supposed to do as I get to painting. I’ve been known to start slapping paint on the canvas and go off on a tangent, completely different from what my collector and I discussed!

We’re all sketched up and ready to begin painting in our next session. Hope you’ll come follow along!
