It’s ALL About the DOOR!

I fell in love with this door the very first time I saw it in 1990 when Jack took me to visit all 21 of the California Missions. This beautiful blue portal was tucked away in the courtyard at Mission San Juan Bautista. It will be the cornerstone in my showstopper painting for my 2019 Collector Event in Santa Fe!

The entire piece is designed around the doorway. I’ve made up the courtyard based on memories of different places we’ve traveled over the years. You may click on this, or any of the other images to view them larger.

I begin sketching the composition on the canvas with a brush dipped in a thin oil wash of MUD + Liquin!

WHAT’S MUD??????? It’s the base mixture for several of our color recipes using the Double Primary Palette Color Mixing System that Jack developed. MUD is 2 parts Ultramarine Blue (UB) + 1 part Alizarin Crimson (AC). To find out more about this system CLICK HERE!

The double curves of the walls will gently encourage the viewer to wander through the painting.

A straight edge is used to draw the steps.

Nasturtiums cascade over the foreground wall.

Shadows cast by the gracefully arching leaves of Giant Birds of Paradise will dance on the building and door.

Canna Lilies are hugged by the upper curved wall.

Our plan is sketched up on the canvas and we’re ready to begin applying oil paint in our next session. Hope you’ll come follow along.
