Moreover, I have recommended his books to several of the artists I know, and I can see the change happening in their art careers, all thanks to a generous and caring soul that wanted to share his knowledge and success with others! I have only been painting for two years, but in the last four months I sold over a hundred of my works, most of them on eBay – I have read all the books Mr. White has written (and not once…) and I make every effort to follow his advice. Yet there is a lot to improve. I admire your work and your spirit, and, knowing how busy you are, I am very thankful for your time reading this note of appreciation! Sincerely, Julia”

Giving THANKS for All of Our Blessings!

November 27, 2019

WE ARE SO BLESSED!

Jack and I have always considered Norman Rockwell to be a Master Artist. I grew up admiring Rockwell’s paintings on the covers of the Saturday Evening Post Magazine; his attention to detail was amazing. I’ve used this painting in my Thanksgiving greeting before but it’s a favorite; definitely worth repeating! It portrays the essence of those heartwarming moments in the kitchen, catching up with friends and family you haven’t seen in ages, that make Thanksgiving so wonderful.

Rockwell’s painting also reminds us that just living in this great country is an incredible gift from God. We are very thankful for all of the men and women who have sacrificed so much so we can enjoy our lives in America. We ALL have much to be thankful for, God has certainly blessed each of us. Please remember to thank Jesus every single day for his gifts because “Thanksgiving is an attitude of the heart, not a day of the year.”

I would like to take this opportunity to let you know how thankful I am for you! I’m very blessed with all of your loving encouragement and support!

I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving filled with Laughter, Love and Hugs,

She’s Got a Bite!

Colt’s face is painted with the same mixtures used for Paxton and Taggart. Just to refresh your memory, the color recipes are MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + Alizarin Crimson + a touch of Cadmium Red Light + White and MUD + Alizarin Crimson + Cadmium Orange + Ultramarine Blue + White. The warm skin tones stand out against the cool greens of the grass behind them.

Shades of Pthalo Blue + White are used for Colt’s coat. Then I begin working on Ainsley’s face, using the same paint mixes. Please remember, you may click on this or any of the other images to view them larger.

Ainsley’s blonde ponytail flips in the air, accentuating the movement of her gesture as she reels in her catch. Combinations of MUD + Cadmium Orange + Cadmium Yellow Medium + White are used for her beautiful long hair.

Mixes of Pthalo Blue + Ultramarine Blue + White are used for Ainsley’s leggings; the lower part of her coat is made with Magenta + White.

Granddad’s cowboy hat is painted with the same mixtures used for his granddaughter’s blonde locks.

Combinations in different proportions of Cobalt Blue + White are used for his shirt.

“She’s Got a Bite!”

Our scene at the family’s favorite fishing spot is DONE!

“She’s Got A Bite!” Closeup

Paxton claps his hands in delight and joy at Ainsley’s good luck. Taggart and Colt look at each other as if to say, “I can’t believe “She’s Got a Bite” before us! Olaf is poised; ready to jump in to get the fish and proud Granddad happily takes it all in. What grand memories for everyone! Thank you for following along; I really appreciate your encouraging comments as well. Hugs,

Olaf, Paxton and Taggart

November 25, 2019

Today I begin with Olaf! He’s really anxious for Ainsley to reel that fish in, looks like he might just jump in the lake to help! The browns in his coat are painted with several mixes of MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + Cadmium Orange + White. The whites are blocked in with MUD + White and Ultramarine Blue + Cadmium Orange + White.

The boys and granddad are wearing blue jeans. Several shades of MUD + Ultramarine Blue + White are used for their comfortable pants.

Paxton is next. His face is blocked in with MUD + Alizarin Crimson + a touch of Cadmium Red Light + White and MUD + Alizarin Crimson + Cadmium Orange + Ultramarine Blue + White. A #4 round brush is used to delineate his tiny eyes. You may enlarge the image to see this better, just click on the picture.

Mixes of Cadmium Red Light + Alizarin Crimson and pure Cadmium Red Light are used for his heavy shirt. In my reference photo the shirt was plaid. But I feel the busy fabric would take away from Paxton’s face. I don’t have an exact likeness yet. I’ll take a rest from working on him for a while and come back later to finish up.

Now for Taggart’s “Orange” hair! Cadmium Red Light is added into the paint leftover from Olaf to use for Taggart’s spiky do.

The shirt made of mixtures of Ultramarine Blue + Cadmium Yellow Medium + White compliments Taggart’s skin and hair.

WHEW! I can hardly believe it’s taken an entire day to paint Olaf, Paxton and Taggart. Those little bitty faces and hands are a fun challenge. Hope you’ll come back and watch the next session, we should finish up! With Big Hugs,

Painting the Mountain Lake

November 22, 2019

VIDEO DEMONSTRATION: Painting the Mountain Lake

Now the water is complete I begin painting the grass. In the distance the grass is made with mixes of Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Orange + White. This makes a cooler green that will recede. Moving closer to the foreground, warmer combinations of Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Yellow Medium + White are used. The cast shadows are darker mixtures of Pthalo Blue + a bit of Ultramarine Blue + Cadmium Yellow Medium.

Ainsley’s fishing rod is drawn into the wet grass with a fine liner brush. It’s much easier to do this before the underlying paint is dry. It would be difficult to make a smooth line over the lumps and bumps of the grass texture. To see this better you may enlarge the picture by clicking on the image.

The sunlit grass in the foreground is Ultramarine Blue + Lemon Yellow + a touch of White. The immediate foreground is painted in shadow, establishing a “Threshold”. The dark across the front of the painting accentuates the light behind it. Think of standing outside your home on a warm summer night; the front door is open revealing the well lit interior. That light inside the house draws your eye through the dark, across the threshold of the door to the bright interior. It works the same way in the painting. The light in the distance pulls your gaze over the dark shadow “Threshold” and into the painting, giving the feeling of depth!

The painting, still attached to the backing cardboard, is taken off the easel and placed upside down to paint the lower edge of the gallery wrap canvas.

Our setting is finished, I’ll begin work on the figures in our next session!

Several of you have asked me to show my palette at the end of the day. So here it is, you can see all of the different grass mixtures! Lined up on the left side is the leftover paint from the sky, mountains and distant trees. It will stay usable for 3 to 4 days. So if I need to go back and work on an area I don’t have to remix the color! Thank you for following my blog! With Colorful Smiles,

Trees, Trees and more Trees

November 20, 2019

The upper portion of the sky is painted first with a mix of White + Cobalt Blue. Closer to the horizon, in the dip between the mountains, a lighter combination of White + Pthalo Blue is used. Then the mountains are blocked in with several mixes of White + Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Orange and White + Ultramarine Blue.

VIDEO DEMONSTRATION: Blocking in the Trees in the Background

As I mentioned previously the beautiful fishing spot is on a thin strip of land bordered by a serene lake on one side and a rollicking mountain brook on the other. Sunlight sparkles on the most distant part of the stream. Then the trees lining the bank, directly behind our group that’s fishing, cast long shadows across the rough rapids.

Dark tree trunks accentuate the light catching the tip and guides on the fishing pole Granddad is holding. I brace my left hand on the unpainted part of the canvas to steady my right in order to delineate the fine detail. You may enlarge the image to see this better, just click on the picture.

The foliage of the trees on this bank are painted with warmer greens made of several combinations of Ultramarine Blue + Cadmium Yellow Medium + Cadmium Orange + White, Ultramarine Blue + Cadmium Yellow Medium + Lemon Yellow + White and Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Orange + Lemon Yellow + White.

All of our trees are finished. Even at this point you can see how the warmer greens of the trees on the right come forward of the cooler ones in the background on the left. That’s all for today, I’ll be working on the lake in our next session, hope you’ll come watch! I’ll have a video showing how I paint the reflections. Thanks for visiting my studio! See you soon. A Grand Time with the Grands

November 18, 2019

My newest commission is designed around this beautiful fishing spot hugged by the tumbling waters of a river and a quiet mountain lake. The painting will be a Christmas gift for the gentleman in the image above. The concept is for him to be enjoying a grand time fishing with his four grandchildren. His daughter sent me several pictures of the kids in various positions.

Using her pictures I was able to compose a family fishing scene incorporating Grandpa, the grand kids and Olaf, the dog!

Following my composition in the sketch I begin to lightly draw all of the figures on the blank canvas in pencil. The pictures are taped to my canvas so I can refer to them as I work. You may click on this or any of the other images to enlarge them. Sure makes it easier to see the details.

Paxton is the youngest. A thin oil wash made of MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + Liquin is used to establish the shading on his face and clothing. At this point I’m not trying to achieve exact likenesses of everyone, just want to get the basic values delineated.

Taggert and Colt (the child I’m working on) are now sketched in. In the picture Virginia sent, Taggert was wearing a cap. She asked me to remove it so we’ll be able to see his red hair. Or as he calls it, “ORANGE”!

Olaf, the dog, is next!

Ainsley is the oldest. If you’ll notice in the image before the one directly above, her body is more upright. I decided to lean her back a little more to give her gesture extra action.

If you’ll look back to the very first picture you can see Grand dad has nothing in his right hand. In the painting he’s going to be holding a fishing rod so let’s get busy and draw that hand in!

The background is sketched in and we’re ready to begin painting in our next session. Hope you’ll come watch! RIVER’S SONG

November 15, 2019

VIDEO DEMONSTRATION: Blocking in MAMA Bear!

Sunlight pours into the painting from the upper right. The forehead and bridge of the mother bear’s nose are highlighted with pure White.

White is also used to make the tiny catch light in Mama’s eye. You may enlarge the picture by clicking on the image to see this more clearly.

The sweet little cub is painted with the same mixtures used for her Mama. The color recipes are all explained in the VIDEO at the beginning. The dark rocks behind the baby accentuate the light on her back, shoulders and head.

Bears are finished, now let’s start on the water cascading down the falls….

VIDEO DEMONSTRATION: Painting the Falling Water and Upper Pond

Reflections of the dark rocks are pulled straight down into the water below them. The darker water in the lower pond is made with several combinations of Ultramarine Blue + Pthalo Blue + a touch of MUD + White and Pthalo Blue + Pthalo Turquoise Blue + a bit of MUD + White.

The canvas, still attached to the cardboard, is now laid flat on the taboret next to my easel. This makes it easier to paint the lower edge of the gallery wrap canvas. You can see the reference pictures for the waterfall on my laptop.

Jeana’s niece loves Lavender Lilies and Sunflowers. So we decided to let a couple of clumps of Daylilies grow along the left bank of the stream. The blossoms are mixtures of Dioxazine Purple + Magenta + White.

Sunflowers stand guard over the rock carved with the special message for Ashley!

“River’s Song”

If you listen carefully I bet you can hear the “River’s Song” serenading Mama Bear and her daughter as they enjoy the beautiful fall day. The wise mother knows winter is soon to come so she’s taking in all the warm sunshine she can. Thank you for all of your warm comments and encouragement; I REALLY appreciate you! With BIG BEAR HUGS,

Painting Fall Foliage

November 13, 2019

VIDEO DEMONSTRATION: Painting the Fall Foliage

VIDEO DEMONSTRATION: Adding the Tree Trunks

The brilliant fall foliage in the background is finished, let’s begin painting the rocks tumbling down the slope. They are blocked in with several shades of MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + Cadmium Orange + a touch of Ultramarine Blue + White.

Rocks continue over the edge and on to the side of the gallery wrap canvas.

Strokes of Ultramarine Blue + White + a tiny bit of the rock color are added here and there. This helps to give the impression that the large boulders are wet from water splashing wildly from the fast running stream.

Jeana asked me to etch the saying “Love You Forever” into one of the boulders. This is accomplished using a fine liner brush dipped in a mix of MUD + Liquin. Please remember, you may click on this or any of the other images to see them larger.

She also requested that I add this Mother and Daughter design, along with the initials of her niece and her little girl.

We’ve got the background and rocks along the mountain stream done, I’ll be painting the Polar Bears in our next session. Come watch, I’ve NEVER painted these creamy white animals before. I’m planning on doing a video so we’ll see how they go! With Colorful Smiles,
