Delightful Dance

April 29, 2020

Working on a new painting that I’m offering for Mother’s Day! I’ve got the Hummingbirds and Day Lilies all sketched on the canvas in thin oil washes made of MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + Liquin, Sap Green + Liquin and Pthalo Blue + Liquin. As you read though my blog please keep in mind, you may click on any of the images to see them larger.

Hummingbirds are some of my favorites to paint. Viridian Green + White is used for the head of the Ruby Throat Hummers. The wings are mixes of White + MUD + Cadmium Orange + Ultramarine Blue.

My wrist is braced against the edge of the canvas (out of the picture) to steady my hand as I delineate their tiny eyes.

The long, strap-like leaves of the Day Lilies are made with mixes of Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Yellow Medium + Lemon Yellow. White is added for the lightest values. A few strokes of Pthalo Blue + White are made in the depth of the foliage for additional coolness.

Cadmium Orange and more White is mixed into the leaf color for the flower buds.

Stamens are painted with a mix of Alizarin Crimson + Liquin.

Don’t you adore Hummingbirds? Maybe the MOM in your life does too! I know my heart sings with happiness when I hear the distinctive squeaks and hums of the zippy little bundles of energy frolicking in our garden. They beckon me to stop whatever I’m doing, relax and watch the joyful antics of their “Delightful Dance”!

MYSTERY JACK????

April 28, 2020

Late Sunday afternoon I was working at my desk in the studio when I heard a loud “CLUNK” at my front door. An Amazon delivery van was speeding away as I looked out. On my porch was a small box addressed to me, however there was no return address. When I picked it up, was I ever surprised. That tiny package weighed A TON! Overwhelmed with curiosity, I grabbed a knife and quickly cut the sealing tape. Inside, wrapped in tissue, was a heavy, cast iron JACK!

I had no idea who sent this fun reminder of “Our JACK”! I questioned a couple of my friends who didn’t have a clue. So this morning, just as I began to email others, I received one from Jason Abbott. He readily confessed to sending the wonderful surprise! Jack and I met Jason many years ago. Jack mentored him and he has become a very successful artist. We even have some of Jason’s beautiful paintings in our collection.

Here’s one of Jason’s recent pieces of Maui. If you’d like to see more of his work just CLICK HERE!

Here’s Jack and me with Jason and his sweet wife Deborah on Tobago Cays. They joined us on a Caribbean cruise in 2006. I will treasure this “JACK”, heavily laden with delightful memories of Jack, Jason and Deborah. Thank you again Jason! With Love and Hugs,

A Little Garden Break

April 17, 2020

Yes, I’m working on a new painting as you can see. But after those last few commissions and long blogs I’m kind of “STEP-BY-STEPPED OUT”! So let’s take a little Garden break! Please remember as you read through my post, you may click on any of the pictures to see them larger.

This yellow Iris is one of my faithful bloomers. I have some purple ones that blossom occasionally but this sweetie produces it’s beautiful flowers on a regular basis.

My long time friend, Carolyn, gave me this Amaryllis last year. I love its deep red color. Goes well with “Slinky”, my talavera kitty, who is taking his morning stretch.

Our Dragon Wing Begonia is full of red flowers too. The glass hummingbird appears to be getting a good sip of nectar!

Peggy Martin Roses on the arbor are just breaking out in their soft pink blossoms.

Here’s the Rose Arbor from our deck on the opposite side. This is the view from my studio window! Thought you’d enjoy a quick stroll through the garden today. Thank you for all of your wonderfully kind and encouraging comments. I appreciate them more than you’ll ever know. Please stay safe! With Big Hugs,

Chet and Betty

April 13, 2020

I’m painting Betty in this session. Because the Hawaiian Anniversary photo I’m working from is way too blue, Chet asked me to use this picture as reference for Betty’s golden tan skin. All of the colors will be mixes, in different proportions, of MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + Cadmium Orange + Alizarin Crimson + Cadmium Red Light + White.

After painting Betty’s arm, shoulder and neck I work on her Black, Tahitian Pearl necklace. The individual pearls are mixes of Ivory Black + Pthalo Blue, Ivory Black + White and pure Ivory Black. You may click on this image, or any of the others, to see enlargements.

Her Turquoise blouse is painted with mixes of Pthalo Turquoise Blue + White. Then, keeping the two reference photos handy, I begin blocking in Betty’s lower face.

Her lips are made with combinations of MUD + Alizarin Crimson + White.

A large square tipped Bright brush is used to initially block in the color on Betty’s forehead.

Betty’s Smiling Irish Eyes are a deep green. I use some of the color from the Palms + MUD + a little White mixed in.

Her blonde hair is painted with mixtures of MUD + Cadmium Orange + Ultramarine Blue + White. Even though she is a light blonde, the hair underneath is darker. Notice in the first picture, as light as Betty’s hair is on top, it’s darker in the depths. This plays up the sun-lightened hair on top. As Jack always taught, “You can’t have light without dark!” We also need the dark around Betty’s face to give it form.

The last step is to add the fragrant Plumeria blossom above Betty’s left ear. This is a Hawaiian tradition that lets everyone know, she loves Chet! On the right side would mean she was looking for someone else. The flower is made of Permanent Rose + White and Permanent Rose + Cadmium Red Light + White. The yellow stripe in the center of each petal is Cadmium Yellow Medium + a touch of Orange and Cadmium Yellow Medium + White.

HAPPY EASTER

April 12, 2020

He is Risen INDEED! ALLELUIA!

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”  John 3:16

I am so blessed to have every one of you in my life. Your friendship, continued encouragement, support, thoughts and prayers have been incredibly wonderful. The Love God shows and the Beauty He creates leaves us in total awe. Our hearts are filled with peace and tranquility, knowing He gave his only son to die for our sins.

Rejoice, CHRIST HAS RISEN!

Thank you for being part of my life and HAPPY EASTER!

Painting Chet

April 8, 2020

I’ve actually compressed three days work into this post showing how Chet is painted. Portraits require meticulous painting, it takes LOTS of time and patience to achieve a likeness. Because the photo Chet asked me to use as reference is way, way too blue, I’m using the picture above to match skin tones for Chet and Betty. In fact, from the original photograph I thought Chet’s shirt had a black background, actually it was a rich chocolate brown. You’ll see the change at the end of this post.

All of the mixtures for Chet are combinations in different proportions of MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + Cadmium Orange + Cadmium Red Light + White. First his neck and chest are blocked in. Please remember as you read through my blog, you may click on any of the images to see enlargements.

The lower part of people’s faces are cooler, in men this is much more pronounced because of their heavy facial hair. Mixes of Cerulean Blue + White are worked into the paint on Chet’s chin to make it cooler.

The cheeks and nose are more red. The skin in this area of the face is very thin, blood vessels near the surface cause it to be redder. Up around the corners of Chet’s eyes, laugh lines are lightly indicated. In painting portraits Jack had a basic rule, always make your subjects appear a few years younger by de-emphasizing wrinkles. These will be softened even more in a little bit.

The teeth are painted as a solid unit with a mix of White + MUD. Then the shapes of the teeth are delineated along the lip line. Outlining each and every tooth will make it appear as if there is a picket fence in Chet’s mouth.

Chet’s mustache and hair are salt and peppery, with more pepper than salt. His full mustache is painted dark, then the lighter hairs are pulled into the darker mixes.

Chet’s deep blue gray Irises are painted with mixes of Ultramarine Blue + Ivory Black + White. Adding the tiny catch light at 1 o’clock in each eye makes them come alive with smiles.

A necklace of Coral and Puka Beads nestles at the base of his neck. The dusty Burnt Orange Coral is made with Alizarin Crimson + MUD + Cadmium Red Light + White.

Changed the background of the shirt to Chocolate Brown and we’ve got Chet finished. I’ll be working on Betty in the next session. I really appreciate all of your wonderful comments and encouraging words. THANK YOU! With Grateful Hugs,

Chet’s Hawaiian Shirt

April 6, 2020

Starting to work on Chet’s Hawaiian Shirt. The dark background, made of mixes of Ivory Black + a little Ultramarine Blue + White, is painted first. Then combinations of Ultramarine Blue + a touch of Ivory Black + White are used for the design of Blue Protea Flowers. Please remember as you read through my blog, you may click on any of the images to view enlargements.

 VIDEO DEMONSTRATION: Chet’s Hawaiian Shirt

The flowers are painted loosely with thick brushstrokes to give an impressionistic feeling. I don’t want a lot of tight detail here because it would take away from Chet and Betty’s faces. They are the Stars of the Painting.

Buttons on Chet’s shirt are painted with the same mixes as used on the background of the pattern.

Betty’s blouse is washed in with a mix of Turquoise Pthalo Blue + Liquin, I’ll paint it later after I’ve completed her face.

I’ll begin working on Chet in our next session, hope you’ll come back to join me and follow along! I pray that all of you and your families are safe. This is a crazy time, so please take care of yourselves!

PALMS!

April 3, 2020

I begin applying opaque oil color in the sky. The upper portion is covered with a mixture of White + Cobalt Blue.

The lower part is painted with a lighter combination of White + Pthalo Blue. The cool hues of the blue sky and green Palm Fronds will accentuate Chet and Betty’s warm skin tones.

VIDEO DEMONSTRATION: PALMS

How ironic that I’m painting PALM FRONDS today. This weekend is Palm Sunday, when Jesus made his triumphant entry into Jerusalem on a young, donkey colt; just days before He was crucified, died and rose again to pay for our sins. What an amazing blessing for us all!

The large Frond farthest back is made darker and bluer with several mixtures of Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Orange + White. The closer one is painted with warmer greens mixed in various proportions of Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Orange + Cadmium Yellow Medium + White.

Now I block in the edges of Betty’s hair. This way I can soften the wispy strands into the wet paint of the Palms behind her.

The large frond behind Chet is painted next. Right now the Palms look fairly prominent. However the edges are soft and they will fall back as the warm colors and details on Chet and Betty are completed. Betty’s hair looks a little lopsided at this point. But don’t worry, I still have lots of work to do on her and Chet. We’re not anywhere close to being done yet!

Our backdrop of greenery is complete. If you listen closely you just may be able to hear the feathery fronds rustling in the soft Hawaiian breeze! Thanks for following along today, please come back to the studio to see how this portrait progresses. With Colorful Smiles and CyberSAFE Hugs, Mikki
