Sunny Welcome

June 25, 2020

Hi Everyone! WHEW, I’ve been super busy working with the Team that is responsible for reopening our Church at 50% capacity. Seems like every week is filled with new challenges, especially now with Covid Hospitalizations increasing. But Our Lord is guiding us in keeping everyone safe. In the meantime I have been able to get in a little bit of easel time. This painting brings us to beautiful Santa Fe, ‘The City Different’! My basic plan is sketched up on the 16 inch by 16 inch canvas in a thin oil wash of MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + Liquin. The Red Peppers are delineated with Alizarin Crimson + Liquin.

Please remember, you may click on any of the images to see enlargements.

Sun streams over the adobe walls made with combinations of MUD + Cadmium Orange + White and Ultramarine Blue + White.

The shadows on the bright Cadmium Red Light gate are Cadmium Red Medium + Alizarin Crimson. Then the Bougainvillea cascading over the arch is painted with several mixes of Permanent Rose + White. The colorful bracts are blocked in first, then leaves of Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Yellow Medium are added around the masses of Pink.

The steps and the rugged stones lining the planters are made of Ultramarine Blue + Cadmium Orange + White and MUD + Ultramarine Blue + Cadmium Orange + White. The surface of the floor is covered with various combinations of MUD + Cadmium Orange. Then the tile lines are drawn into the wet paint with a Fine Liner Brush dipped in a mix of MUD + Liquin.

Baskets are so fun to paint. Some of the colors remaining from the floor are used for the wicker strands making up the unusual design.

A cheerful sun face tile brings a touch of whimsy to the scene.

With large white blossoms and deep yellow centers, you can see why Matilija Poppies are sometimes called “Fried Egg” Flowers!

“Sunny Welcome”  11 inches by 11 inches

The brilliant orange Nasturtiums, spicy chili Peppers, cheery Sunflowers, the happy red gate and whimsical wall tile all add up to extend a “Sunny Welcome” to everyone who visits this colorful garden.

THANKS for following along today! With Hugs and Smiles,

“Mariposa Bonita”     6 inches by 6 inches

My new roof leaked during the last big rainstorm we had in our area. That has now been fixed but my ceiling had a lot of water damage. Fortunately when the workmen came to repair that portion of the studio, I was still able to continue working at my easel. As I finished this piece Manuel and Miguel came over to look. At the very same time they both said, “Mariposa Bonita”, Spanish for “Beautiful Butterflies”! I thought that was a perfect title for this colorful little Embryo. Manuel and Miguel were so happy that I used their name! The Monarchs floating gracefully over the Red Orange flowers are certainly “Mariposa Bonita”!

An old barn surrounded by Bluebonnets, how Texas can you get! Seems like every time Jack and I came across a scene like this we’d wonder out loud, “What would that old barn say if it could talk? How many springs do you think this one saw? Imagine the families that worked there, children picking bluebonnet bouquets to take to their moms, little girls brushing their ponies in the stalls and all the generations growing up enjoying the beautiful Texas wildflowers?” Think of how many wonderful “Memories of Spring” fill this weathered, old barn!

Mariposa Bonita

June 15, 2020

Butterflies today! First did a quick pencil drawing of my idea in my sketchbook.

Next, the basic plan is drawn up on the 6 inch by 6 inch AMPERSAND cradled panel with a brush dipped in a thin oil wash of MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + Liquin. Please remember as you read through my blog, you may click on any of the pictures to see them larger.

The background is painted with mixes of Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Orange + White. The blue tones will accentuate the rich, rusty browns and oranges in the wings of the Monarchs.

Several combinations of Cadmium Red Medium + Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red Medium, Cadmium Red Light, Cadmium Orange, Permanent Rose + Cadmium Orange and Permanent Rose + White are used for the bright petals of the Coneflowers.

Various proportions of MUD + Cadmium Orange + Cadmium Red Light make up the multiple shades of Burnt Sienna used for the delicate wings of the Butterflies.

The distinctive dark edges and accents on the wings that identify the Monarch are pure Ivory Black.

My new roof leaked during the last big rainstorm we had in our area. That has now been fixed but my ceiling had a lot of water damage. A crew has been here repairing the soggy sheetrock and repainting that portion of the studio. Fortunately I was still able to work at the easel. As I was finishing the painting Manuel and Miguel came over to look. They both said, “Mariposa Bonita”, Spanish for “Beautiful Butterflies”!

A Sip of Sunshine

June 11, 2020

Sunflowers are always fun to paint and everyone seems to love them. These will be surrounded by Petunias and White Bacopa Daisies. The initial plan is sketched on a 6 inch x 6 inch Ampersand Cradled Panel in a thin oil wash made of MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + Liquin.

I hadn’t originally planned for a Hummingbird in the painting, but he just magically appeared! So I carefully work around the little fella with my background mixtures of Cadmium Red Medium + Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red Medium and Cadmium Red Medium + Cadmium Red Light. Please remember as you read through my blog, you may click on any of the images to see enlargements.

VIDEO DEMONSTRATION: Painting the Sunflowers

Combinations of Permanent Rose + Cadmium Red Light + White and Permanent Rose + White are used to block in the Petunias. A few brush strokes of Cadmium Orange are made, here and there, in the flowers to give additional warmth to the blossoms.

The Viridian Green used for the Hummingbird’s head and body glows against the deep Red background.

Soft Bacopa blooms are painted with mixes of White + Dioxazine Purple, White + Pthalo Blue and White + Ultramarine Blue. The gray-green foliage is various combinations of Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Orange + White.

“A Sip of Sunshine”  6 inches by 6 inches

Red, Orange and Yellow centers bring a touch of happiness to the White Flowers. My heart dances with delight that Mr. Hummingbird has zipped in for “A Sip of Sunshine”! Thanks for following along today!

Memories of Spring

June 9, 2020

Starting on another EMBRYO, these are so fun to paint! Thought I’d take you back a few months to our Texas Spring and Bluebonnets. I begin sketching my plan on the 6 inch by 6 inch Ampersand Cradled Panel in a thin oil wash made of MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + Liquin. Please remember as you read through my blog, you may click on any of the images to see them larger.

The rising sun is just warming the clouds in the early morning sky! The darkest portions are MUD + White, the lighter parts are White + Alizarin Crimson + Cadmium Red Light and White + Cadmium Red Light + Cadmium Orange. All of the mixes are mostly White with only a touch of the other colors added in.

Trees and the distant Bluebonnets are painted, now we’re ready to start on the old, weathered barn. COME WATCH!

VIDEO DEMONSTRATION: Painting the Barn

After completing the barn, I move to the Bluebonnets in the middle ground. The grass is combinations of Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Yellow Medium + Lemon Yellow, the Bluebonnets are made of Cobalt Blue + White.

Another patch of our Texas State Flower nestles at the base of a cactus. The “Caps” of the flowers behind the cactus are added with a mix of White + a tiny bit of Ultramarine Blue. These on the blossoms closest to the viewer are pure White, making them come forward.

Memories of Spring       6 inches by 6 inches

An old barn surrounded by Bluebonnets, how Texas can you get! Seems like every time Jack and I came across a scene like this we’d wonder out loud, “What would that old barn say if it could talk? WELCOME BACK EMBRYOS!

June 5, 2020

You may not know that my art career officially began at the Medical College of Georgia. How’s that you ask? Well, I earned a Master’s Degree in Medical Illustration there! We took all of the same gross anatomy, embryology, pathology and comparative anatomy courses the Medical students did, plus additional classes in the exacting illustration techniques required. Years later, after Jack taught me to paint, I was working on some small pieces. He suddenly exclaimed, “These are BABY PAINTINGS, let’s call them EMBRYOS to pay homage to your training!” My collectors loved these sweet little gems. It’s been a while since I’ve done any of these fun, happy paintings so I’m saying, WELCOME BACK EMBRYOS!

Here’s your chance to add some “Billboard of Happiness” EMBRYOS to your collection. These three are Filled with a Flutter of Wings! Butterfly, Cardinal and Hummingbird wings to be exact! And I’m offering them at special WELCOME BACK prices just for you, my Team Senkarik Family!

“Monarch Magic”   6 inches x 6 inches

Jack and I lived in Pacific Grove, California just before the turn of the Century. WOW, that sure sounds like a LONG time ago! Our beautiful town on the rocky coastline was in the migration path for Monarch Butterflies heading south to winter in Mexico. Seeing them flitting from flower to flower in the garden never failed to lift my heart, it was “Monarch Magic”!

REGULAR PRICE $490   SPECIAL WELCOME BACK PRICE $390   SOLD!

“House Hunting”  10 inches x 10 inches

I think our House Hunting couple, Mr. and Mrs. Chippers, are giving this quaint little birdhouse some serious consideration. Can’t you just hear him asking, “You like it honey? Would this be a good place to raise our family?” I know if it was me, I’d certainly like to live here. WHAT DO YOU THINK? As you enjoy this painting in your home envision that they’ve already moved in, with little baby Cardinals inside, waiting for Mom and Dad to bring breakfast. Listen carefully, I bet you’ll hear them chirping!

House Hunting

June 2, 2020

The roof is painted with mixes of Ultramarine Blue + a touch of MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + White and Ultramarine Blue + White. A few rusty spots have been added with MUD + Cadmium Orange. Then the white walls are made of White + Ultramarine Blue and White + MUD. The shadow of our daddy Cardinal, Mr. Chippers, streams down across the Heart-shaped door opening. You may click on any of the images to view enlargements.

I decided our sweet couple would rather have a brand new roof, so I scraped off the entire surface and repainted it a bright Cobalt Blue.

VIDEO DEMONSTRATION: Painting Mr. Chippers

Female Cardinals are a soft taupe color, I’ve used mixes of MUD + Cadmium Orange + Ultramarine Blue + White for Mrs. Chipper’s body. But her tail, wing and the feathers in her ‘cap’ have accents of Cadmium Red Light + Alizarin Crimson.

Mixtures of Magenta + Dioxazine Purple + White and Magenta + White are used for the delightful Morning Glories cascading over the cozy home.

“House Hunting”           10 inches by 10 inches

I think our House Hunting couple, Mr. and Mrs. Chippers, are giving this quaint little birdhouse some serious consideration. Can’t you just hear him asking, “You like it honey? Would this be a good place to raise our family?” I know if I was her I’d certainly like to live here, WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Painting again!

June 1, 2020

I’m back painting again! Working on a fun little piece of a pair of Cardinals checking out a new home! Here’s my sketch. It will be painted on a 10 inch by 10 inch Ampersand Cradled Panel purchased from JerrysArtarama.com.

I’ve printed out the pictures I’m using for reference and taped them to my easel where they are easy to see. The basic plan for the painting is sketched on the panel with a thin oil wash of MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + Liquin. I’ve primed the panel with white acrylic and then painted the 1.5 inch sides with Black acrylic. Please remember as you read through my blog, you may click on any of the images to see them larger.

After the birds and the little bird house are drawn I begin blocking in the Morning Glories with oil washes of Magenta + Liquin and Dioxazine Purple + Liquin.

The background is covered with combinations, in several different proportions, of Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Orange + Cadmium Yellow Medium + White and Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Orange + White. The soft greens will make the Red Male Cardinal POP! It will also accentuate the subtle red tones in the Mama bird.

The heart shape of the Morning Glory leaves mimic the heart shaped opening of the sweet little bird house. The foliage is made of Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Yellow and Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Yellow Medium + Lemon Yellow. Vines are drawn into the wet paint with some of the darker greens as well as warmer mixes of MUD + Cadmium Orange + White.

The painting is signed while the leaves are still wet. If the underlying paint was dry my brush would hop and skip over the bumps, making it difficult to make the calligraphy smooth. Thank you for following along today, we will finish up in our next session. I’m even going to have a video demonstration showing how I paint Mr. Chippers, the Red Northern Cardinal. With Colorful Smiles,
