A Baby Collaboration

I’m starting on a “Baby” Collaboration today, a 6 inch by 6 inch EMBRYO! My VIDEO DEMONSTRATION shows how I draw the initial plan on the AMPERSAND Cradled Panel, with a brush dipped in a thin Oil Wash made of MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + Liquin.

The Oil Wash “Road Map” is complete, we’re ready to begin painting.

Adobe walls are made of mixes in various proportions of MUD + Cadmium Orange + White. I also work some brushstrokes of Ultramarine Blue + White into the shadows for additional coolness. You may click on any of the images to see enlargements.

The beautiful Abergine Purple door is a mix of Dioxazine Purple + Magenta + White. More White is added into the sunlit portion of the door. The color is actually more Magenta than it appears in these pictures, digital images tend to accentuate the blue tones.

The entire surface of the floor is covered with mixes of MUD + Cadmium Orange + White and MUD + Cadmium Red Light + Cadmium Orange + White, establishing the light and shadow pattern.

Perspective lines are pulled into the wet floor with a fine liner brush dipped in a thin mix of MUD + Liquin.

The horizontal lines separating the individual Terracotta tiles are drawn, then the Baby Painting is signed with Cadmium Red Light in the shadow area. I prefer to do my signature when the underlying paint is fresh, it’s much easier to make the calligraphy flow freely. If I waited until the floor was dry it would be difficult to make the lines smooth over the bumps, lumps and rough texture.
