Eastern Bluebirds are our subject today. These sweet little babies have been washed in with oil mixtures of MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + Liquin, Burnt Sienna + Liquin and Cobalt Blue + Liquin. This will be a companion piece to “Harbingers of JOY” that was shown in my previous post. CLICK HERE if you’d like to see that!

The wintery background is painted with combinations, in different proportions, of White + Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Orange. Then the thin twigs are drawn into the wet paint with a brush dipped in the oil wash made of MUD + Liquin. You may click on this or any of the other images to see them larger.

The foliage of the tree is made with mixes of Cadmium Orange + MUD + Pthalo Blue + White. As with the background, I make several shades to have a variety of warm and cool colors in the leaves.

Red berries add a POP of cheerful brightness to the scene.

Ivory Black is used for the dark tips accenting the wings of the Eastern Bluebirds.

SNUGGLED UP  6 inch x 6 inch EMBRYO

It’s a cold, blustery winter’s day, the colorful Bluebirds are “SNUGGLED UP”, enjoying the warmth of their buddies. I imagine the fella in the middle is especially nice and toasty! BRRRRRRR! That’s where I’d be; I’m a wimp when it comes to the cold!
