Deer Valley – Here We Come!

February 26, 2021

Starting a new commission today. My collectors went to Deer Valley, Utah for an anniversary celebration and came home the proud owners of a beautiful lot overlooking Jordan Lake!

Dana asked me to paint a scene of the view from their future home, with the landscape at the peak of fall color. I’ve used an architectural rendering of the house plan as reference to develop my sketch of the pergola covered terrace. Please remember as you read through my blog, you may click on this, or any of the other images, to view enlargements.

The horizon line is established first, then the vanishing point for the perspective of the overhead beams is placed at the far left edge of the canvas. It’s indicated by the black arrow. All the lines are drawn with a brush dipped in a thin mixture of MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + Liquin.

The basic shapes of the distant hills surrounding Jordan Lake are washed in with the same MUD oil wash mixture.

We decided to change the chairs to some that are square with lattice backs. The same perspective point, on the left edge of the canvas, is used to draw the chairs.

Sunflowers and Bougainvilleas will be planted in the large containers on the left of the terrace.

Alizarin Crimson + Liquin is used for the wine in the glasses. Sap Green + Liquin is perfect for the bottle. A little of the Alizarin Crimson wash is added in the lower part, indicating there is still some more vino to enjoy!

Now the lattice backs are added to the chairs.

Our basic plan is sketched up on the canvas and we’ll begin painting in our next session. Hope you’ll come back to my studio and follow along!

BRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!

February 16, 2021

Woke up Monday morning to a huge surprise in this part of Texas, SNOW!!!!!!!  I know those of you who live up in the Frozen Tundra are laughing but this is a rare occurrence here!

My studio looks so awesome, covered in the wintery blanket!

Here’s a few pictures of my garden.

It’s 28 degrees out there, still a bit too cold for this Southern girl to go sit out on the bench.

Another big surprise was NO POWER! BRRRRRRRRR!!!!! But I’ve finally got electricity and internet access, YIPPEE!!! First since 7PM Monday evening when the power came on for 1 minute! Before that it was on for 5 minutes at 6PM. The last power more than 5 minutes at a time was at 9AM Monday. Was down to 10 degrees Sunday night and 14 degrees last night. It’s been 48 degrees in the house, I’ve been bundled up today working on sketches for commissions. Fortunately, I have a gas water heater so could get a nice hot shower this morning. I’m just really thankful to Our Lord that I have a wonderful home to bundle up in.

I’m incredibly glad warmer weather is on the way! Now that my studio is brightly lit again, I’m still working on that complicated surprise portrait. So, I won’t be posting any paintings for a little while. But just wanted to share my snow pictures with you and let you know I’m OK! Thanks to everyone for your concern. You’re the BEST! With Lots of Warm Hugs,

From my HEART!

February 14, 2021

Being a huge Charlie Brown and Snoopy fan, I can’t think of anything better than letting them say, “HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY” for me! I so appreciate you being part of my Team Senkarik Family, it warms the cockles of my heart knowing you are there for me.

I haven’t posted any blogs for a few days because I’m working on a special portrait of seven people! My collector has asked me not to do a blog showing the progress because she’s concerned her surprise may be discovered. After the painting is done and the surprise has been revealed, I’ll show you the portrait.

Have a wonderful VALENTINE’S DAY, stay safe and please know I keep you in my Heart and Prayers!

Jack’s Spyglass Hill

February 5, 2021

I’ve been commissioned to do a hand embellished LIMITED ORIGINAL Giclee on Canvas of Jack’s original oil painting, “Spyglass Hill”. This beautiful golf course is located near Carmel and Pebble Beach. The first five holes wind their way in and out of the sand dunes along Monterey Bay. We lived near here in 1999, we loved taking drives through this picturesque area. It was especially magical when the fog rolled in, shrouding the distant trees in mist. That was the feeling Jack wanted to capture in this painting. The raw Giclee is shown above, the printed image is washed out and the colors not as vibrant as Jack’s original art. Please remember as you read my blog, you may click on any of the images to see them larger.

I watched Jack paint this piece and he taught me all of his color mixtures, making it easy for me to embellish this piece. The mixes for the sky and distant trees are shown above. #1. Pthalo Blue + MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + Cadmium Orange + more Ultramarine Blue + a tiny bit of white. #2. Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Yellow Medium + White. #3. Two combinations of White + Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Orange.  #4. Pthalo Blue + a touch of MUD + White. #5. Three mixes of White + a little bit of MUD + a tad of Ultramarine Blue.

The sky is completely repainted with the #5 mixtures. The darkest of these is used on the left.

Since the light and fog come into the painting from the right, the sky is made progressively lighter as we move to that side.

Foggy mist, rolling in from the ocean, fades the trees in the distance. They are painted with mixes #3 and #4.

One of the most spectacular sights is when the sun breaks through, washing portions of the misty landscape with warmth. Treetops, catching the sunshine, are highlighted with mixes of Cadmium Orange + a little Pthalo Blue + White.

The Fairway is made cooler (more blue) in the distance so it will recede.  It becomes warmer (yellower) as it nears the Green.

Sand dunes dot the landscape. Those farthest away are painted cooler with White + a bit of Ultramarine Blue, the closer ones are White + a touch of Cadmium Orange.

Various combinations of Pthalo Blue + Lemon Yellow are used for the Putting Green. The emerald grass, near the flag, is in shadow so it’s made darker.

The flag is Cadmium Yellow Medium + Lemon Yellow.

The craggy rocks and rolling dunes in this area are covered with Ice Plant. It blooms in the spring and by Easter the flowers of the succulents form a solid pink carpet.

Jack wanted to paint the Ice Plant as it was just beginning to bloom. He liked the juxtaposition of the pinks, blues and greens! Permanent Rose + White, Permanent Rose + Cadmium Red Light + White and Cadmium Red Light + White are used for the small flower buds.

LIMITED ORIGINAL of Jack White painting “Spyglass Hill”

Embellishing this giclee of Jack’s painting “Spyglass Hill” has brought wonderful memories of the many happy times we shared in the beautiful Monterey Bay area. This has been special and I thank my collectors for giving me this heartwarming opportunity! Thanks for following along! With Colorful Smiles,

PLACES IN THE HEART

February 1, 2021

VIDEO DEMONSTRATION: Painting the Baby Rabbit

The Pink Geraniums are painted FLOWERS FIRST (1) and LEAVES LAST (2). The blossoms are Permanent Rose + White, while the leaves are mixes of Pthalo Blue + Lemon Yellow. Please keep in mind, you may click on any of the images to see enlargements.

Sunflowers are blocked in following the same sequence. After the foliage is painted the large, dark centers in the blooms are added with a mix of MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + Liquin.

The finishing touch on the Geraniums is to add the buds that cluster at the base of the individual flowers.

Jennifer’s family lived in many different places as she was growing up, Texas is one of her favorites.

The Minnesota Flag is in honor of one of my collector’s dear friends, Marty, who Our Lord took Home to Heaven recently.

Jennifer also spent time in Venezuela and the United Kingdom as a young girl.

Brazil and Egypt were home at various times too!

“PLACES IN THE HEART”   Original Oil Painting

All of the people symbolized in this painting and the locations indicated by the flags hold special “PLACES IN THE HEART” of my collectors. I pray that every time they look at this piece on their wall, their souls will be filled with many happy memories of their loved ones and the wonderful times they shared. Thanks for following along on this painting, I do hope you’ll come back and visit my studio again soon. With Big Hugs,
