Crimson Visitor

April 23, 2021

Using an AMPERSAND Cradled Panel as my support, I begin sketching the basic design of my composition with a thin oil wash made of MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + Liquin. The Red Northern Cardinal is washed in with Alizarin Crimson + Liquin. My reference pictures are taped to my easel, making them easy to refer to as I work. You may click on this or any of the other images to view enlargements.

The adobe wall in the background is covered with several mixes in different combinations of White + MUD + Cadmium Orange and White + MUD. The corner of my Bright (square-tipped) Brush is used to work carefully around my sketch. To learn more about the brushes I prefer to use CLICK HERE.

VIDEO DEMONSTRATION:

Blocking in the Sunflowers and White Daisies.

The surface of the floor is painted with mixtures of MUD + Cadmium Orange + Cadmium Red Light, Ultramarine Blue + MUD + White and Cadmium Orange + Pthalo Blue + White. I let the sunlight splash across the tiles from the right. Then the perspective lines are drawn into the wet paint with a thin brush dipped in a mix of MUD + Liquin.

Various combinations of MUD + Ultramarine Blue + Cadmium Orange + White are used for the heavily textured wicker basket.

Silver Pony Foot Vine spills out of the basket from under the Sunflowers.

The highlights on Mr. Chippers fiery feathers are made of Cadmium Red Light + White.

The final step is to accentuate the petals of the Sunflowers illuminated by sunshine. Mixes of Cadmium Yellow Medium + Lemon Yellow and Cadmium Yellow Medium + Lemon Yellow + White are used to add the cheery light to these happy flowers!

My heart always jumps for joy when Mr. Chippers appears in my garden. This “Crimson Visitor” is all set to bring that same Cheerful Joy to your heart! I appreciate you following along today!

SPRING’S MAGIC

April 21, 2021

In this session I’m working on a 6 inch by 6 inch Ampersand cradled panel. You can probably tell, I definitely have Spring Fever. It’s so wonderful to see flowers blooming and butterflies flittering around the garden. So I’m bringing them inside to my studio! My reference photos are taped to the easel and I’ve started sketching the basic plan with a thin oil mixture of MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + Liquin. Please remember as you read through my blog, you may click on any of the images to see enlargements.

The sketch on the cradled panel is complete, let’s get to painting. Come Watch…..

VIDEO DEMONSTRATION: Starting to Paint

The foliage and leaflets on the flower buds are painted with mixes of Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Yellow Medium + Lemon Yellow. White is added to make the lightest shade of green. The shadow portion of the White Rose of Sharon blossoms are made of combinations of White + Ultramarine Blue, White + Dioxazine Purple and White + Pthalo Blue. Pure White is used for the petals illuminated by the sun.

The stamen, full of pollen, is mixtures of Cadmium Yellow Medium + MUD, Cadmium Yellow Medium + Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Red Light and Cadmium Yellow Medium + White.

The Monarch’s wings are first painted with mixes of MUD + Cadmium Orange + Cadmium Red Light. Then the distinctive Black edging and pattern in the filmy wings are drawn into the wet paint of the wing with Ivory Black.

The fragrant flowers and whisper of the Monarch’s wings bring a touch of “SPRING’S MAGIC” to your heart! Thank you for following along today!

Delightful Melody

April 16, 2021

Today’s session shows several days of actual painting time at my easel. Application of the Opaque Oils begins in the background, here are my color mixtures. All of the big blobs, in the center of the palette, are mixes in varying proportions of White + MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + a touch of Cadmium Orange and a little more Ultramarine Blue. The paints lined up at the far left of my glass palette are the washes left over from the first session. The colors along the top are the basis of our Double Primary Color Mixing System. If you’d like to learn more about the wonderful Color Mixing System that Jack developed, CLICK HERE!

The flowers, leaves and Hummingbirds that I washed in earlier are now dry. I carefully work around the washed in areas to preserve the design of the composition. You may click on this, or any of the other images to see enlargements.

I love painting shadows. Sunlight spilling over the Cross Vine, illuminates the lowest of the three Hummingbirds, casting his shadow onto the white wall in the background.

The flashing wings are painted wet-into-wet over the background. This enables me to soften the edges, giving the impression of movement.

Cadmium Red Light + a touch of white is used to highlight the “Ruby” throat of the Hummingbird.

The shadow of this fella’s thin, long beak streaks down over his bright White chest!

The leaves are painted with the flat, broad edge of my Bright, square tipped brush. CLICK HERE to learn more about the brushes I prefer to use.

Mixes of Cadmium Red Light + Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Orange + Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Orange and Cadmium Orange + Cadmium Yellow Medium are used for the trumpet shaped blossoms.

The deep centers of the flowers are added with a mix of Magenta + Liquin.

“DELIGHTFUL MELODY” 19 inches tall by 9 inches wide

Let the antics, squeaks and whispering wings of the Hummingbirds fill your soul with their “DELIGHTFUL MELODY”! It’s been fun having you visit my studio. Please do come back again! Hugs,

Cross Vine and Hummers

April 13, 2021

I’ve got SPRING FEVER so I’m starting a SPRING painting today. Fortunately our Cross Vine survived the brutal cold that we had in February. It’s blooming profusely now and Hummingbirds are loving the trumpet shaped blossoms. I make a quick drawing of my idea in a sketchbook to solidify the composition. Please remember as you read my blog, you may click on any of the images to view enlargements.

VIDEO DEMONSTRATION: Sketching the Initial Plan on the Canvas

VIDEO DEMONSTRATION: Sketching One of the Hummingbirds

The blossoms of the Cross Vine are blocked in with mixes of Permanent Rose + Liquin and Magenta + Liquin.

Thin oil washes of Sap Green + Liquin and Pthalo Blue + Liquin are used to block in the foliage. I carefully work around the flowers as I want their color to remain vibrant.

Now the delicate stems and twigs of the rambling vine are added.

I‘ll allow this to dry completely and begin applying opaque oil color in our next session. Hope you’ll come back and follow along! HUGS,
