THANKSGIVING TREASURES

November 24, 2021

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving. I want to pause a moment in the hustle bustle of preparations to let you know just how much all of you mean to me. I’m sharing an excerpt from a favorite book of mine, “Jesus Calling”; Sarah Young’s scripture-based devotional is written as if Jesus is talking directly to you. The words of yesterday’s message have been dancing in my heart ever since I read them.

“As you go through this day, look for treasures strategically placed along the way. I lovingly go before you and plant little pleasures to brighten your day. Look carefully for them, plucking them one by one. When you reach the end of the day, you will have gathered a lovely bouquet. Offer it up to Me with a grateful heart. Receive My Peace as you lie down to sleep, with thankful thoughts playing a lullaby in your mind. “

My heart overflows with Thanksgiving for the special Treasure of your Friendship. You are a bright, beautiful flower in the incredible bouquet of gifts I’ve been given. May Our Lord fill you and your family with His Peace and Joy as you give thanks for all the blessings in your life.

“Enter his gates with thanksgiving
    and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.”

Psalm 100:4

Have a Safe and HAPPY THANKSGIVING! With Grateful Hugs,

Blooms ‘n Bluebirds

November 19, 2021

VIDEO DEMONSTRATION: Painting the Pink Petunias

The heart-shaped leaves of the Sweet Potato Vine are made with combinations of Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Lemon Yellow. You may click on any of the images to see them larger.

The body of the Bluebird has been painted using several shades of Cobalt Blue + White. A mixture of MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + Cadmium Orange + Cadmium Red Light + White is used for the rusty markings on the bird’s neck.

MUD is added into the darkest Cobalt Blue + White mix to make the long feathers of the wings and tail.

The same mix used for the neck of the first Bluebird is now used to paint the rusty chest feathers of the one balanced on the curved handle of the basket.

The wicker basket full of “BLOOMS ‘N BLUEBIRDS” brings a smile to my heart! Hope it does yours as well!

Come watch the progression from the pen and ink sketch to the finished painting! I appreciate you following along on my Blog and YouTube Videos. Please subscribe to both. With Colorful Hugs,

Delightful Daisies

November 16, 2021

We’ll begin applying the opaque oil paint with the background. My color recipes are shown above. #1. White + Pthalo Blue. #2. Three shades of White + Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Orange. Please keep in mind, you may click on any of the images to see them larger.

All of the flowers, leaves and birds that were completed in the previous session are now dry. Because sunlight comes into the painting from the upper right, I paint that corner with the lightest of the three #2 mixtures. The background becomes progressively darker as we move down and to the left.

The entire surface of the wicker basket has been painted with mixes of MUD + Ultramarine Blue + Cadmium Orange + White, establishing the light and shadow pattern. Now, the crevices between the strands of wicker are indicated with a mix of MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + Liquin Original. The corner of a larger, square tipped, Bright Brush works perfectly to drag the lines into the wet paint of the basket. To learn more about the brushes I prefer to use, CLICK HERE.

The strands of wicker, illuminated by the sun, are highlighted with some of the lightest basket mixture that has more White added.

Combinations of Cadmium Orange + Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red Light + Cadmium Orange and Cadmium Orange are used for the petals of the Daisies.

The Daisies that were washed in previously are now dry. Leaves are painted around them with mixes of Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Yellow Medium.

Now I come back to paint the Daises that are surrounded by the leaves. I have to be careful to wipe and clean my brush after every stroke. Here’s why……

My brush picks up some of the green when I’m painting the flower petals. If I don’t clean my brush in between brushstrokes, the green will muddy the color of the blossoms, dulling their bright hues.

Centers are made with mixes of MUD + Cadmium Orange.

That’s all for this session. Hope you’ll come back for our next one, we’ll be finishing up. I’m planning to have a video demonstration showing how I paint the Petunias! I appreciate you following along. Hugs,

Petunias, Daisies and a Touch of Blue!

November 12, 2021

Here’s the pen and ink sketch for the fifth painting in my Birds and Blooms series. It will be 12 inches by 12 inches. Please keep in mind as you read through my blog, you may click on any image to see an enlargement.

The basic outline of the birds and basket is made with a brush dipped in an oil wash made of MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + Liquin Original. The photo I’m using for reference is taped to my easel, you can see I’ve changed the gesture of the bird a little. Thin washes of Cobalt Blue + Liguin Original and Burnt Sienna + Liquin Original are used to indicate the colorful feathers of the Bluebirds.

Daisies are washed in with a combination of Alizarin Crimson + Liquin Original, while the leaves are Sap Green + Liquin Original.

The Petunias are a thin oil wash of Permanent Rose + Liquin Original; Viridian Green + Liquin Original makes up the foliage. Sap Green wash from the Daisies is used for the heart shaped leaves of Sweet Potato Vine.

The wicker basket is now drawn in with the MUD wash.

Washing in the flowers and birds with color helps me to determine the overall balance of the painting’s composition. Another advantage is that the oil wash completely covers the canvas in those areas, I won’t have to worry about the pesky, tiny white specks that appear when the thicker oil paints don’t totally fill in the rough texture of the cloth. And, speaking of thicker oil paints, work begins with them in our next session.

WE STAND FOR OUR FLAG

November 11, 2021

TODAY IS Veterans Day in America. It’s a federal holiday we observe on Nov. 11 for the purpose of honoring military veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces. This is a day to remember not only veterans still alive today but also those who gave their lives in service to our country. Many families in America have lost loved ones, leaving behind grieving parents, siblings, spouses, children, and other loved ones and friends.

To honor our heroic veterans I’d like to invite you to watch this video

It’s my hope and prayer that you will be inspired by this video to thank God for the veterans you know and love, those about whom you’ve heard, and those of whom you’ve never heard. Thank you, dear veterans, past and present, for your dedication, service, and sacrifice to and for the United States of America.

God Bless our Veterans! God Bless their Families! God Bless America!

COLORFUL COMPANIONS

November 8, 2021

The bodies of the American Goldfinches are painted with combinations of Cadmium Lemon Yellow + MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson), Cadmium Lemon Yellow and Cadmium Lemon Yellow + White. You may click on any of the pictures to view enlargements.

The wings, tail and black markings of the Goldfinch are made with Ivory Black. The white outlines of the individual wing feathers are delineated with White + a little MUD.

Some of the orange from the Zinnia blossom he’s sitting on, reflects up, onto the tummy of this pretty fella!

Using Ivory Black, his distinctive head markings, wings and tail are now painted.

Sunlight streaming into the painting from the upper right illuminates the lower left portion of the Goldfinch’s brown iris. Then the tiny white catch light is made at approximately one o’clock.

You can see how this method of painting the birds’ eyes gives them personality and makes them appear alive!

These “Colorful Companions” are a beautiful complement to the brilliant Zinnias they’ve chosen for their gourmet dinner!

VIDEO PROGRESSION of “Colorful Companions”. I really appreciate you following along today. I’ll be starting on the last of my Birds and Blooms series of paintings in our next session! I do hope you’ll come back and join me. With Colorful Smiles,

Change Up

November 5, 2021

The background is painted with mixes of White + MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson). Three shades are made: Medium, Lighter and Lightest. The sun pours into the painting from the upper right so the lightest mixture is used there. The background is made progressively darker toward the left side of the canvas. Please remember as you read through my blog, you may click on any picture to see it larger.

I’m not at all happy with my first choice for the background. It’s just too blah for me. So I change up and paint over the previous color with mixes of Ultramarine Blue + a tiny bit of MUD + White.

I already like this much better!

Zinnias are painted, wet-into-wet, over the background. This allows me to make the flowers flow freely and smoothly. If the underlying paint was dry, the edges of the individual petals would be ragged and bumpy. Mixes of Cadmium Red Deep + Cadmium Red Light, Cadmium Red Light, Cadmium Red Light + Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Orange + Alizarin Crimson and Cadmium Orange + Cadmium Yellow Medium are used for the blossoms. The dark centers are tipped with Cadmium Yellow Medium + White.

Foliage is added with combinations of Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Yellow Medium + White, Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Orange + White and Pthalo Blue + White. The long stems are made by turning my square tipped “Bright” brush sideways. If you’d like to learn more about the brushes I like to use, just CLICK HERE!

The broad, flat edge of a larger “Bright” brush is used to shape the leaves.

Magenta + White and Magenta + Cadmium Red Deep are used along with the other mixes to paint the Zinnias in shadow.

The colorful blossoms dance in the gentle breeze. The cool blue background makes the warm Red/Oranges of the flowers appear even more intense. I’m so glad I decided to Change it Up! We’ll work on the bright yellow American Goldfinches in our next session. See you then! Hugs,
