An Aggie Barn

This painting is for collectors of mine who are “Aggies”. If you don’t live in Texas or are not a fan of College Football you may shake your head in wonderment. What’s an “Aggie”? In its purest sense, an aggie is “someone from the farm”. The name was commonly given to students attending agricultural schools.  The term “Aggie”, reflecting the agricultural roots of Texas A&M (Agricultural & Mechanical College), was first used in the 1920s. In 1949, the yearbook changed its name from The Longhorn to Aggieland. At that point, Aggie became the official student body nickname. What’s interesting is the University of Texas, A&Ms biggest rival, is called THE LONGHORNS!

Anyway, enough history. My pen & ink sketch for our collaboration is shown above. Please remember as you read through my post, you may click on any image to see it larger.

I begin drawing the basic plan on the canvas with a brush dipped in a thin oil wash of MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + Liquin Original.

The maroon portions of the Texas A&M logo are indicated with an oil wash of Alizarin Crimson + Liquin Original.

Spring rains cause delightful babbling brooks to tumble over the rocky landscape of the Texas Hill Country. A broad, square tipped “Bright” brush is used to make the shapes of the rocks lining the small creek.

Colorful Wildflowers and Cactus will cover the hillside up to the barn. We’ll begin painting with opaque oils in our next session. Hope you’ll come back to my On-Line studio and follow along.
