Venetian Awnings

Now, let’s finish the second half of our painting of Venice! I love how time and weather have muted the various colors of the buildings over hundreds of years. Mixes of Alizarin Crimson + MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + White are used for this one.

You may click on any of the pictures to see them larger!

The Viridian Green and White striped awnings glow against the soft hues of the ancient structure’s walls

The closest building is made warmer and brighter with a mix of MUD + Cadmium Orange + Cadmium Red Light + White. This makes it appear to come forward of the cooler colors behind it.

Magenta + Dioxazine Purple + White Angelonia nestle in the terra cotta container with Geraniums and Nasturtium.

The Red Geraniums are painted in two steps. 1. Flowers are blocked in with combinations of Cadmium Red Deep + Magenta and Cadmium Red Deep. 2. Leaves of Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Lemon Yellow are worked around the masses of red, helping to shape the blossoms.

Tiny flower buds finish out the Geraniums. Nasturtiums are painted in the same order: Flowers First, Leaves Last. The fragrant blooms are mixtures of Cadmium Orange + Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Orange and Cadmium Orange + Cadmium Yellow Medium.

Ivy cascades down, over the awning of the second building. It’s fun making the shadows of the heart shaped leaves on the stripes.

Venetian Awnings – 10 inches by 10 inches

It’s a delightful morning in beautiful Venice. Wouldn’t you love to live here? Imagine walking out under the striped awning on the little balcony in the early morning, sipping your coffee and watching gondolas glide past the Santa Maria della Salute across the Grand Canal. When you go back inside don’t forget to snip off a few of the Nasturtium blossoms, they’ll be a colorful, spicy addition to your salad at lunch! Plus they are high in Vitamin C!
