Fragrant Greeting

VIDEO DEMONSTRATION: Painting the wonderfully fragrant Spanish Jasmine with Oils. To learn more about the Double Primary Color Mixing System I use CLICK HERE!

Terra Cotta containers, residing on the window sill, are blocked in with combinations of MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + Cadmium Red Light + Cadmium Orange + White. The edge of the curved pot is lined with Ultramarine Blue + White, to give the appearance of roundness. You may click on this, or any of the other images to see them larger.

The entire surface of the floor is painted with the mixes used for the tiles on the roof. My main purpose in this step is to establish the shadows and the light streaming across the courtyard floor from the left.

Perspective lines, indicating the crevices between the tiles, are drawn into the wet paint of the floor with a fine liner brush dipped in a thin oil mix of MUD + Liquin Original.

The spicy Chili Peppers, hanging in a ristra by the door, are painted with mixes of Cadmium Red Deep + Magenta, Cadmium Red Deep and Cadmium Red Deep + White.

The flowers of the Geraniums are first painted with mixes of Permanent Rose + White (1). The leaves are then added with several shades of Pthalo Blue + Lemon Yellow + White (2).

Because the Salvia blossoms extend above the leaves, I go ahead and paint the foliage first. Combinations of Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Orange + White are used.

The tall, slender spires of flowers are added with Dioxazine Purple + White and Dioxazine Purple + Ultramarine Blue + White.

Cheerful Sunflowers nestle along the wall below the Chili Ristra, adding to the jumble of colorful blossoms providing a “FRAGRANT GREETING” to all who visit this delightful courtyard. I appreciate you following along today. With Warm Hugs,

Beginning Anew

February 18, 2022

Let’s get started on a new piece for my gallery in Wimberley, Texas, Pitzer’s Fine Art. This will be a “Quintessential” Senkarik; a courtyard with red door, window and loads of flowers. I begin by sketching the basic plan on the canvas with a brushed dipped in a thin oil wash of MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + Liquin Original. I use a T-Square, balanced on the top edge of my canvas to draw the upright lines.

A Chili Pepper Ristra, hanging by the door, is washed in with Alizarin Crimson + Liquin Original. You may click on this, or any of the other pictures to see enlargements.

After sketching all of the elements up on the canvas, I label the flowers so I don’t forget my initial plan!

The oil paints are mixed for the adobe building and tile roof. My color recipes are: #1. White + Ultramarine Blue. #2. Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Orange + White. #3. Five combinations of MUD + Cadmium Orange + a little Cadmium Yellow Medium + White and #4. Four mixes of MUD + Cadmium Orange.

After painting some of the wall areas using the #3 mixtures, the trunk of the Spanish Jasmine is drawn into the wet adobe color with a mix of MUD + Liquin Original. I’ve used a little of the #4 mix to begin accentuating the trunk.

OPPPSSS! I had great intentions of having a video showing how to paint the terra cotta tile roof. In fact, I even made it. However, when I downloaded the video from my camera, I realized I FORGOT to focus the camera at the start. Silly Me!!!!! Anyway, I used mixes #1, #2 and #4 for the thickly textured tiles.

The shadow part of the window is a mixture of Cadmium Red Deep + Magenta, the sunlit portion is pure Cadmium Red Light. Pulling out my trusty T-square again, I use it to guide my brush as I make the vertical parts of the window.

The red door is painted with the same mixes. That finishes us up for this session, hope you’ll come back to visit my studio and watch the progression of this piece. I’m planning to have a video demonstration of painting the Spanish Jasmine tumbling over the roof. That is, IF I can remember to Focus my camera!

Chock Full of LOVE

OIL PAINTING VIDEO DEMONSTRATION: Painting the Delicate Pansies!

Using Oil Paint, the Bluebonnets are blocked in with mixtures of Cobalt Blue + White. The gray-green foliage is combinations of Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Orange + White. You may click on this or any of the other images to see enlargements.

Mixes of Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Lemon Yellow + White are used for the heart-shaped leaves of the Sweet Potato Vine.

The deep crevices between the petals of the Yellow Roses of Texas are delineated with a mix of Permanent Rose + White.

The shadows on the paper thin Rose petals are made with Cadmium Lemon Yellow + a bit of MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson). The sunlit portions are mixes of Cadmium Lemon Yellow + White.

The entire surface of the tile floor is covered with mixes of MUD + Cadmium Orange + Cadmium Red Light + White. The lighter values are dragged across the canvas from right to left to indicate the sunlight splashing into the scene.

Perspective lines are drawn into the wet paint of the floor with a brush dipped in a mix of MUD + Liquin Original.

Nasturtiums nestle at the base of the bright Yellow Boots. The blossoms are Cadmium Orange + Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red Light + Cadmium Orange and pure Cadmium Orange. The round leaves of Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Yellow Medium + White are shaped by twisting my square-tipped, Bright brush.

“CHOCK FULL OF LOVE” is finished, just in time for my collector to “GIVE” to his wife for Valentines Day. It will have to dry a couple of days before I can ship it, then she’ll be able to enjoy her special gift in person.

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY to you! I so appreciate you being part of my Team Senkarik Family.

Sunflowers, Boots and Hummingbirds

February 11, 2022

I’ve painted the background and am now working on the Sunflowers. The bright, cheery blossoms are blocked in with mixes of Cadmium Yellow Medium + Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Yellow Medium + Cadmium Orange and Cadmium Yellow Medium + MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson). You may click on any of the pictures to see enlargements.

Leaves, made of Ultramarine Blue + Cadmium Lemon Yellow and Pthalo Blue + White, are painted around the masses of Yellow, helping to shape the flowers. Then centers are added in the Sunflowers with a mixture of MUD + Liquin Original.

Using some of the Cadmium Yellow Medium + Alizarin Crimson mix leftover from the petals of the Sunflowers, the details of the large centers are delineated. This mix mingles with the MUD used in the previous step, making a rich brown.

Several shades of Ultramarine Blue + White are used to paint the large, ceramic container. The Sunflowers, Leaves, Hummingbird and Petunia cast shadows on its curved surface.

The Petunias also cast their distinctive shadows down the tops of the yellow boots.

It’s fun adding the red hearts on the boots!

Our zippy little Ruby Throat Hummingbirds are painted while the area surrounding them is still wet. This allows me to soften the tips of their wing and tail feathers, helping to give the impression of movement.

The third Hummer is painted and we’re finished for today. We’ll be planting more flowers in our next session. Hope you will come back to follow along for the rest of this Valentine painting! With Colorful Smiles,

Boots Full of Flowers

February 9, 2022

These boots full of flowers are a fun commission for a long time collector. He’s asked me to do this as a Valentine surprise for his sweet wife. So please help me keep the secret and don’t tell her! My basic plan is sketched out with a Sharpie pen in my sketchbook. As you read through my blog you may click on any of the images to see them larger.

Moving to the canvas, I begin by drawing the boots with a brush dipped in a thin oil wash of MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + Liquin Original.

Our recipient LOVES Hearts, so I let the Heart-shaped leaves of a Sweet Potato Vine tumble down and hug the boots.

Just have to add a few Yellow Roses of Texas to the bouquet!

Sunflowers are another of her favorites. As well as Texas Bluebonnets, that are washed in with a mix of Ultramarine Blue + Liquin Original.

Delicate Johnny Jump Up Pansies dangle out of one of the boots, enticing a Hummingbird to visit.

Two more Hummers zip into the scene!

The red tops and hearts on the boots are washed in with Alizarin Crimson + Liquin Original.

The heads of the Hummers are Viridian Green + Liquin Original, while their ruby necks and the soles of the boots are made with the same mixture we used for the hearts. I’ll let my oil wash drawing dry and we’ll begin painting in our next session. Hope you’ll come back and follow along.

Koi and a Turtle

February 8, 2022

I’m embellishing a Giclee on Canvas of my Original Oil Painting “The Joy of God’s Creation”. The unembellished Giclee is shown above. My collector, who owns the original painting, is giving this as a gift to a friend. Michael asked for a few changes to make the piece unique. Please remember, you may click on any of the images to see enlargements.

Using oils, the first change is to make the Orange Koi with white splotches, predominantly White. We’ll leave a couple of Orange spots on its head.

The Koi in the upper left corner of the painting is made completely Orange with white fins.

I’ve decided to change the Water Lily Blossoms to Pink. Since the Koi at the bottom of the painting has been repainted and is now mostly White I feel there needs to be a little more contrast and color. First I glaze the flowers with an oil wash of Permanent Rose + Liquin Original.

The glaze was allowed to dry overnight so I’m able to come back and paint the flowers with opaque mixes of Permanent Rose + White. The centers of the blossoms are accentuated with thick brush strokes of Cadmium Yellow Medium and Cadmium Lemon Yellow.

Michael thought it would be nice to add a Turtle on one of the Lily Pads. I have to say, in all of the paintings I’ve done in 32 years, I’ve NEVER painted a Turtle. This is fun! The first step is to sketch his basic shape with a thin oil wash of MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + Liquin Original.

The Turtle’s shell is painted with combinations of MUD + Cadmium Orange + Ultramarine Blue + White. Lines separating the individual Plates or Scutes of the shell are made with the MUD Wash that was used to sketch the basic outline of the Turtle in the previous step.

The Turtle’s head, feet and tail are added and we’re done! Compare this with the first image and notice how it’s changed. That’s why Jack came up with the term LIMITED ORIGINALS for my embellished Giclees on Canvas. Even though they are part of a very Limited Edition, each individual embellished Giclee is Uniquely Original!

The Fruits of the Spirit

February 2, 2022

Julie loved fall colors: Burgundys, Rusts and Golds. We’ve done the Burgundy and Rust flowers, let’s begin on the Gold ones! My color recipes are shown above: #1. Two shades of Cadmium Yellow Medium + Cadmium Orange. #2. A couple of mixes of Cadmium Yellow Medium + Cadmium Orange + a touch of Alizarin Crimson + a little MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson). #3. Pthalo Blue + Cadmium Yellow Medium. #4. Two mixtures of #3 + White.

The flowers are blocked in first. You may click on any of the images to see them larger.

Followed by the leaves.

Since there are two PEACE Bookmarks, I add a Hummingbird to the second.

A Painted Lady Butterfly, one of my personal favorites just because of the name, flits in to highlight our SELF-CONTROL Bookmark!

The KINDNESS Bookmark will be given to Dottie. She and her Aunt Julie had a special fondness for the uniquely shaped leaves of the Ginkgo Biloba Tree. I decided to include some of the fruit that fits right in with our color scheme.

And since all of our other Bookmarks have flowers I add some Ginkgo blossoms. Normally, they are more creamy colored than I’m painting them. Taking artistic liberty, I’ve selected a soft Lavender so they will show up against the white background.

A Monarch floats in to complete the composition.

We’re almost finished. All that’s left to do is pull off the tape!

Here goes…….

Now we’re DONE!!!! So that’s how I paint 10 paintings all at once. As soon as these are completely dry, I’ll cut them apart and our 10 Bookmarks will be finished. Thank you for following along. Hope you’ll come back to my studio to see what’s up on my easel next!
