Gleaming in the Sun

September 18, 2020

Tall chimneys cast long shadows across the warm roofs and white buildings.

The windows and flower boxes on this building are made with Pthalo Blue + White. This hue is more intense than the window and shutter color used on the building to the left. Because this building is closer to the viewer, the intense colors help to make it come forward, while the more muted colors on the structure to the left recede.

The roof and chimney of a shorter building in the middle ground are illuminated by the sparkling light.

Geraniums and Sweet Potato Vine spill out of the flower boxes in the distance.

VIDEO DEMONSTRATION: Painting the Magenta Vine tumbling over the roof.

Bougainvilleas made of Permanent Rose + White cover the roof of the house in the foreground. Combinations of Viridian Green + Cadmium Yellow Medium are used for the foliage.

“Gleaming in the Sun”

Feel the warmth of the brilliant Mediterranean sun as it dapples over the rooftops, warming the terra cotta tiles and making the stucco buildings GLEAM IN THE SUN!

Adopt this cheerful EMBRYO to brighten your home with glistening sunshine. This 10 inch by 10 inch Embryo on Cradled Panel with Black Edges is valued at $590. BUT RIGHT NOW “Gleaming in the Sun” is specially priced, just for my TEAM SENKARIK Family, at $490. Just CLICK HERE to make this baby Senkarik Original Oil Painting ALL YOURS!

Long Time Idea

September 15, 2020

I’ve had the idea for this painting for a long time. I decided now is the time to do it. One of my favorite memories of traveling through the villages of Spain, as well as many of the other Mediterranean countries, is the white and creamy stucco buildings topped with Terra Cotta tile roofs. I’d originally planned for this to be a vertical or portrait orientation. But the more I looked at the sketch I decided a square format would be better. Please remember as you read through my blog, you may click on any of the images to see them larger.

I’m working on a 10 inch x 10 inch Ampersand Cradled Panel. The sides have been painted Black, then covered with blue painters tape to prevent the oil paints from bleeding on to them. When the painting is finished I’ll pull the tape off and the sides will be nice and Black. I begin drawing the basic design up on the panel with a thin oil wash of MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + Liquin.

Work continues on the sketch.

Next I mix a lot of the colors I’ll be using and lay them out on my palette. You can see the base colors at the top, these are what all the mixtures below are made from. To learn more about the Double Primary Color Mixing System that Jack developed and I use, CLICK HERE.

Two mixtures are used for the sky: White + Pthalo Blue and White + Cobalt Blue. The sky is made lighter on the left because the sun streams into the painting from that side. The mountains in the distance are Ultramarine Blue + a bit of MUD + White. Then the terra cotta tiles topping the chimneys are painted with combinations of MUD + Cadmium Orange + White and MUD + Cadmium Orange + Pthalo Blue + White.

The Window Sashes and Shutters on this building are two different shades of White + Pthalo Blue + a tiny touch of Cadmium Orange.

Next the rooftops are painted, applying the color with heavy, textured brushstrokes. Some of the Window color is brought into the roofs for added interest. This also gives the impression of antique, moss covered tiles.

That’s all for this session, hope you’ll come back and follow along as I continue working on this sunny memory of travels throughout the Mediterranean villages!

The Magic of Santa Fe

September 9, 2020

Before I get started painting I’d like to take a moment to thank all of you for your wonderful comments on my interview with Pastor Chris in the previous Blog Post. YOU ALL ARE THE VERY BEST!

OK, let’s get to work. The Lilac is painted with mixes of Magenta + Dioxazine Purple + White and Magenta + White. The leaves are made with Sap Green + Lemon Yellow.

The flower petals of the Lilac, illuminated by the sun, are highlighted with a lighter mix of Magenta + White. Please remember, you may click on any of the images to see them larger.

White Hollyhocks snuggle up to the door. The shadows are made with combinations of White + Dioxazine Purple, White + Ultramarine Blue, White + Pthalo Blue and White + Pthalo Blue + Lemon Yellow. The corner of my large Bright Brush is used to shape the flowers.

The large blossoms gleam with pure White accents! Just when the Hollyhocks are done a Hummingbird zips into the painting!

Next, Geraniums are planted in the Dioxazine Purple flower box.

“The Magic of Santa Fe”

Hollyhocks, Lilacs, Geraniums, Chamisa and a zippy little Hummingbird bring “The Magic of Santa Fe” to the colorful entrance of this home! With BIG, APPRECIATIVE HUGS,

HAPPY LABOR DAY!

September 7, 2020

WOW, it’s difficult to believe it’s LABOR DAY! September is here already, summer is officially over. Normally this weekend is my Annual TEAM SENKARIK Collector Event as well as the beginning of Football Season! But this year has been unusual to say the least, one for the history books. We’ve all had to take on tasks that we never dreamed of. I know I certainly have. If you’re a regular follower of my blog you’ve most likely noticed I’ve not been doing quite as many paintings as usual. That’s because a lot of my time has been taken up in an entirely unexpected way.

I’m the Leader of the WELCOME HOME TEAM at my Church, Shepherd of the Hills. That’s what we decided to call the Team that’s responsible for establishing and implementing all of the Safety Protocols for re-opening our Church for Worship. WELCOME HOME TEAM seemed much friendlier than SAFETY PROTOCOL ENFORCERS or COVID COPS!

Fortunately God has surrounded me with a wonderful team of people who have been amazing. It all absolutely, could not have done without them. We are responsible for setting all the safely guidelines following CDC, National, State and Local regulations. Everything from socially distanced seating, flow patterns of worshipers coming in and out of Church to sanitizing the Worship Center, bathrooms and public areas. Recruiting, training and working with volunteers at every service to make sure all are safe. We even have a Communion Service in our Parking Lot, I get to help direct our in-car worshipers!

I thought you’d like to watch this podcast interview with my Pastor, Rev. Dr. Chris Kennedy. He’s been doing a series interviewing members of our Church. He thought our Shepherd Family would like to know what life as an artist looks like and learn about Jack’s and my story. ENJOY!

Thank you so much for being part of my TEAM SENKARIK FAMILY! You are a blessing in my life. Have a wonderful Labor Day and please stay safe! With Big Hugs,

Welcome News

September 4, 2020

I received some welcome news a couple of days ago, my Santa Fe gallery sold two small paintings last week! The first sales of my art in the gallery since Mr. Covid came to visit at the beginning of March. So this piece is to fill one of those empty spots on their wall! The basic plan is first sketched on the canvas in a thin oil wash of MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + Liquin. Please remember, you may click on any of the images to view enlargements.

The adobe walls, so typical of Santa Fe, are painted with several combinations of MUD + Cadmium Orange + a touch of Pthalo Blue + White. The shadow mixes have more MUD, the lighter ones have lots of White.

I pull out two special colors for the door and window box, Sevres Green and Dioxazine Purple.

I love how the Sevres Green door and the Dioxazine Purple flower box look together.

The surface of the floor is covered with mixes of Cadmium Orange + Cadmium Red Light + MUD and Cadmium Orange + Cadmium Red Light + MUD + White. A few strokes of the door color are made in the floor below the door to give the appearance of it reflecting into the tile. Then the lines separating the individual pavers are drawn into the wet paint with fine liner brush.

The window is painted with Ultramarine Blue + White. A T-Square is placed on the top of my canvas. Then I pull my brush down, along the edge, to help me make the window sash perfectly upright.

All the construction is complete, we’ll begin planting flowers in our next session. Hope you’ll come back and watch!
